This agreement is for one course of optional or development training that an employer pays for, signed before the training starts. It is not for training the job cannot be done without, or for an apprenticeship.

Who is this template for?

Employers funding a course or qualification for an employee who want a clear, fair record of what is repayable if the employee leaves within a set period, and employees who want to see those terms in writing before training begins.

What does the template include?

The document is made up of numbered sections:

  • Parties — the employer and the employee.
  • The Training — description, provider, dates, total cost, what the employer pays and the Repayable Cost, limited to sums actually paid to third parties.
  • Repayment Scale — a table of percentages of the Repayable Cost by time after completion, reducing over time and never more than the Repayable Cost.
  • Who Must Repay and Who Need Not — tick boxes for resignation, dismissal for misconduct and mutual agreement at the employee’s request; redundancy, other dismissal, employer breach and death or ill-health leaving are pre-marked as nothing repayable.
  • How the Money Is Repaid — written statement of the amount due, payment within 30 days, and an optional instalment entry.
  • Deduction from Final Pay — an optional tick box for the employee’s agreement to deduct from final pay, never taking pay below the National Minimum Wage.
  • Statutory Rights and Disputes — preserves employment rights and provides for the parties to meet over a disputed amount.
  • Signatures — the employee signs before the training starts.
